International Guests from Film, Games and TV at SoundTrack_Cologne 11

Big Names in film and video games at SoundTrack_Cologne 11 — about 70 lectures from the professional fields of music for film, games and media as well as sound design are coming to Cologne from November 19th till 23rd, 2014. Amongst them the film composers John Ottman (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST), Jean-Michel Bernard (BE KIND REWIND · THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP), Oscar nominated Indie-musician Owen Pallett (Score for HER) as well as TV music specialist Jeff Cardoni (CSI: MIAMI). Garry Schyman (BIOSHOCK), Olivier Derivière (ASSASSIN’S CREED IV), Inon Zur (CRYSIS) and Borislav Slavov (CRYSIS 2) will be joining from the field of games music. Representing Germany are the Lola-Award winners Matthias Weber and Tschangis Chahrokh-Zadeh (Best Score and Best Sound for THE DARK VALLEY) and Michael Riessler (Score for the HEIMAT-cycle).

In practically orientated master classes, workshop discussions and panels SoundTrack_Cologne is focused on current topics of the international film and media music scene. Concerts and the music film festival SEE THE SOUND complete the programme.

Computer games like Assassin’s Creed and BioShock make gaming fans rejoice – but what would even the most gripping games be without the proper musical atmosphere? As part of the series „Composing for Games“ major players in the field of game music offer insights in their work and will be discussing differences and similarities between music in games and films. Parts of this year’s line-up are international renowned game composers Garry Schyman (MIDDLE-EARTH: THE SHADOW OF MORDOR · DESTROY ALL HUMANS · BIOSHOCK), Olivier Derivière (REMEMBER ME · ALONE IN THE DARK · ASSASSIN’S CREED IV · BLACK FLAG) and Inon Zur (CRYSIS · PRINCE OF PERSIA·DRAGON AGE). In the all-day master class „Adaptive Music“ Borislav Slavov of the video game company Crytek (FAR CRY · CRYSIS) will – based on concrete examples – show how music actually gets into the video game.

As every year SoundTrack_Cologne welcomes award-winning film composers as guests: With Jean-Michael Bernard (BE KIND REWIND · THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP), who became known for his work with director Michel Gondry, and John Ottman (THE USUAL SUSPECTS · FANTASTIC FOUR · SUPERMAN RETURNS · VALKYRIE), who does not only write the music for director Bryan Singer’s films but edits them as well, two international heavy weights of the industry could be won. Moreover, there will be an all-day hands-on master class with trailer music expert Yoav Goren (CLOUD ATLAS · ARGO · THE HOBBIT · THE DARK KNIGHT RISES). This workshop focuses on the topic of „Epic Music“ – a unique sound created from orchestra, choir and contemporary electronic music.

The Lola-Award winners Matthias Weber and Tschangis Chahrokh-Zadeh continue SoundTrack_Cologne's tradition to have the reigning winners of the German Film Award's film sound devision as guests. Those two did their part to make the Alpine Western THE DARK VALLEY to a success.

The guest list is well rounded up by Owen Pallett, singer-songwriter and Indie-violinist. Even if film scoring isn't his main field of work, his soundtrack for Spike Jonze's future vision HER gained him an Academy Award Nomination.

The final performance of the congress belongs to composer Michael Riessler, who together with accordeonist Jean-Louis Matinier will be playing a concert inspired by Edgar Reitz's DIE ANDERE HEIMAT. Riessler wrote music for this German Film awarded epic.

Realignment with new co-directors: The European University Meeting at SoundTrack_Cologne changes its name and turns into European Education Alliance for Music and Sound in Media (EEAMS) from now on. New coordinators of the initiative are Dr. Vasco Hexel, head of the Masters Programme „Composition for Screen“ at the Royal College of Music, London and Yati Durant, Lecturer of Music, Sound and Moving Image at the Reid School of Music, University of Edinburgh. EEAMS welcomes educators and students in the areas of filmmaking, sound design and film music composition as well as industry professionals of related areas. Serving as network for higher education institutions EEAMS aims to support international collaboration and to bridge interdisciplinary boundaries.

In 2014 SoundTrack_Cologne is again awarding numerous prizes: the PEER-RABEN-MUSIC- AWARD for the best music in a short film, the EUROPEAN TALENT AWARD for up and coming artists in the categories WDR FILMSCORE AWARD and SOUND DESIGN, the SEE THE SOUND MUSIC DOCUMENTARY AWARD as well as the SoundTrack_Cologne Lifetime Achievement Award.

The music film programme SEE THE SOUND continues this list of big names. Over 40 film screenings invite to experience music by amongst many others Björk, Pulp, The National, Sweet Sweet Moon, Fela Kuti and Marvin Hamlisch.

Another highlight of a different kind offers the Finnish film maker Mika Taanila. In three porgrammes he show his music related work between documentary, music video and video art, that has been a part of dOKUMENTA (13) as well.

From Japanese music video to Polish sound art, from US-American club sounds to Egyptian party music, from Bavaria-Kraut-Rock to Broadway musical – SEE THE SOUND shows the whole range of musical creation and the vast richness of ideas with which film makers approach music and moving image

SoundTrack_Cologne is the German festival of music and sound in film and media. Since its inception, with its congress as well as festival programme, SoundTrack_Cologne has developed into the leading European platform for music in film and the media.

SoundTrack_Cologne is part of CineCologne - an initiative of Cologne’s film festivals in autumn that serves as a network for mutual collaboration and promotion of the participating events.
