WORKSHOP: Adaptive Music in Video Games

Composers workshop with games composer Borislav Slavov (Crysis 2, Crysis 3) and Helge Borgarts

Workshop fee: 390.00 Euro (including full SoundTrack_Cologne 11 accreditation)
Goal: The Adaptive Music Workshop is meant for music professionals who want to get familiar with the contemporary Interactive Music for Video games.

The Workshop is divided in 3 parts:
Part I: Theory. What is all about? Techniques in producing Adaptive music for Video Games
Part II: Interactive music set based on your own original composition (Practical, onsite).
Part III: Advanced Adaptive Music Techniques & Project assignment for all participants

Necessary preparation for the participants:
For exercise on-site the participants, prior to the workshop, should prepare an original piece of music and render
it into 5 separate wav stems with the following specifications:

All stems must be same length and must be part of the same composition
• First stem must be a legato-harmony: i.e. it should contain legato strings, synths, pads, sparse accents etc. No big hits, no breaks etc. Overall, the stem‘s key word is – ‚Ambient‘. Use at least 4 different instruments for this stem.
• Second stem must be rhythmic: i.e. spiccato, staccato strings, light rhythmic synths and light rhythmic percussions like shakers, movers etc. Use at least 4 different instruments in it.
• Third stem must be the heavy percussive instruments: acoustic, electronic and other modern percussion instruments. Use at least 4 different instruments in this stem.
• Fourth stem must be a of all the brass: swells, melody lines, passages, stabs etc. Use all the brass instruments for this stem - trumpets, french horns, trombones, tubas.
• Fifth stem is not obligatory, but If you can, record some live solo instrument.

All stems must be the same length, chord progression, key & BPM, i.e. they are the components of the same composition.
All stems need to be provided in wav format 44/16 online prior to the workshop as one ZIP (the file name should be this form: “am-[your full name].zip”) file with a text file included. The text file needs to include the name and a short bio of the participant and a short description of the composition.
No limitation for the style of the composition.
During the course we will learn how the composition is turned into interactive music.

• LIVE DEMO

Part II – Students Project
• Student projects will be checked and open discussion on turning each one into interactive music set. Detailed feedback will be given to each participant.

Part III
• Advanced Adaptive Music Techniques
• The Future of the Adaptive Video Game Music
• LIVE DEMO 02 – Interactive Music Modulations and style changes.
• Changing from Minor to Major key in real time
• Adaptive Track style change in real time – from symphonic to ethnic
• Participants Project Assignment - Adaptive Music Prototype in WWISE.

Projects need to be completed in 4 weeks and remotely sent to the workshop lecturers as YouTube demo video. Each project will receive a remote individual assessment and feedback.

Completion Time for the assignment: 4 weeks


Terms and conditions

The application deadline is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10th, 2014, 09:00am CET.

Submissions have to be sent online. Please send the download link to workshop[at]soundtrackcologne.de.

Please understand that we cannot accept your submission, if:
- You send your submission via web pages that require registration before downloading (e.g. Dropbox).
- Your ZIP file name is not in this form: am-[your full name].zip
- Your submission is not sent as ONE ZIP file or if it requires other software to unpack than ZIP or the ZIP file requires a password to open.
- Your email with the download link arrives later than November 10th, 2014, 09:00am CET.
- You don’t send a text file with your name, your biography and a short description of the composition.

The number of participants for this workshop is limited. The participation fee including full accreditation for SoundTrack_Cologne 11 is 390,00 Euros including VAT. All accepted submitters will receive an invitation by email together with an invoice for the participation fee and further information.
