An event covering music and the media • 19-21 November 2004 • Cinema of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne •
within the framework of c/o pop

Words and Music: Discussing music is not easy to start with and once you add pictures, it gets really tricky. There is no film music composer who hasnt complained about the trouble many directors have when it comes to putting into words the sound they have in mind. And that despite the fact that film music is an applied art, which despite all artistic freedom fulfils clearly defined requirements. However, the misunderstandings dont stop once the film has made it to the cinemas. Film music rarely gets mentioned in the write ups which, most of the time, has to do with one thing: Even the most versed cineastes simply lack the means of expressing what they are hearing.

Let's get talking then. In Germany there is, besides the known wealth of film making talents, a new, highly skilled generation of film music composers. Sound design is more important to the making of the actual film than ever before. The dialogue between storytellers, film makers, composers, audience, and critics, initiated and brought to the Rhine by the International Film Music Biennial Bonn, will be taken up again some kilometres further downstream. This time it will broaden its outlook to include the entire area covering music and sound design in the media. We are all happy to help breathe new life into this discussion.

The Modules

Organised independently, united under one roof.
SoundTrack_Cologne 1.0 provides direction and impetus for SoundTrack_Cologne 2.0, which will take place in August 2005 as part of c/o pop. Within the framework of c/o pop, SoundTrack_Cologne will be the connecting link between the popular art forms film and music.

Module 1 | MediaMusicEconomy

Economic and financial aspects, and those concerning the production of music in films and the media, from the perspective of experts from the professional association MediaMusic:nrw. What are the criteria of professional composing professionally for the media, what is lacking on the part of the musicians as well as their customers? One thing is certain: No composer can do the work all by himself, he needs a competent partner. More often than not, all the involved end up feeling misunderstood. We will go in search of the right language for addressing AUDIOvisual matters, of striking the right note when it comes to combining music with a story, of the solutions to problems which make our work difficult on a regular basis amongst these the fear of collection agencies and the new copyright law.

Module 2 | Cologne Days of Film Music

Aesthetic and cultural aspects of film music. Well-known film music composers, sound designers and theoreticians explain their aesthetic concepts using a selection of films.

Module 3 | European University Meeting - New Sound in European Film

The meeting for up-and coming talents, New Sound in European Film European University Meeting, integrates the most successful point on the agenda of the International Film Music Biennial Bonn, applies the groundwork done there and, for three days during SoundTrack_Cologne, deals with central issues of applied sound track design in European film. Integrating the European University Meeting with representatives from 35 film and music colleges from 18 countries makes SoundTrack_Cologne a specialist event with international significance.
