John Grierson's DRIFTERS from 1929 shows the work of Scottish fishermen in the North Sea. The filmmaker documented the hard life at sea in a poetic narrative style and cleverly used the just emerging art of editing. Technical developments and their impact on the work are issues that are addressed in DRIFTERS and can be found in the composition of Rochus Aust and Markus played by their 1st GERMAN ELECTROPHONIC ORCHESTRA again.

The 1st GERMAN ELECTROPHONIC ORCHESTRA is supplemented with classical and modern instruments. In addition, devices from the fish processing industry are used. Thus synthesizer is mixed with desalinator, clarinet with carving, hawaiian guitar with ice crusher and flugelhorn with can opener to embed the pictures of yesterday in the authentic sound of today.

The 14-minute film COLOGNE: FROM THE DIARY OF RAY AND ESTHER the amateur filmmakers Ray and Esther Dowidat from 1939 show the inhabitants of Cologne, a German-American community with just 350 inhabitants in the State of Minnesota. Along diary entries everyday work and social life of the residents are exfoliated.

DRIFTERS and COLOGNE: FROM THE DIARY OF RAY AND ESTHER are part of the transatlantic project ELECTRO-ICONIC BRIDGE, in which Rochus Aust and the 1st GERMAN POWER ORCHESTRA connect 25 European cities with the places of the same name in Canada and the US.
