In the context of the competition of SoundTrack_Cologne, the EUROPEAN TALENT AWARD was awarded for the ninth time.

The EUROPEAN TALENT AWARD in the categories FILMSCORE and SOUND DESIGN went to John Chua (FILMSCORE), Singapore and Sebastian Kübler (SOUND DESIGN), Germany

The special mention went to an Liina Kullerkupp, Estonia

Quote from the jury's statement:

Category Filmscore: John Chua, Singapore

“The jury has decided to give the award to John Chua because he has demonstrated great creativity and originality while also being brave. His music showed conviction and made no apologies for its choices.

The score shows a strong vision, individual perspective and his immense potential for the future. The jury would like to award this prize to him to encourage him to pursue this career.”

Category Sound Design: Sebastian Kübler, Germany

“The jury has decided to award the prize to Sebastian Kübler for the memorable and creative sound design choices that he made. Very often sound design is merely functional but his work was that of a true storyteller.

His work demonstrated an appreciation of when to be simple and clear, and when to be unusual and creative.”

Special mention: Liina Kullerkupp

“The European Talent Competition 2012 impressed with its great variety of
different approaches in composition and sound design for film.
Young composers - educated in Europe - demonstrate once more the
narrative power of music and sound in film.”, says Matthias Kapohl, head of the European Talent Competition 2012.

Members of the jury were: Tatjana Jakob (sound designer), Jochen Robertz (WDR), David Serong (Cinema Musica), Austin Wintory (composer)

The EUROPEAN TALENT AWARD is sponsored by WDR, Studio Funk/postperfect and supported by Universal Publishing Production Music.

To quote the jury's statement:

'Suckablood' honors the horror movie genre, in which all of the important components of production fit perfectly together. It possesses a musical arc that compliments the time structure of the film.

Enrica Sciandrone pays hommage to classic 70s horror scores while also creates a contemporary interpretation of the horror genre.“

The SoundTrack_Cologne Award to Michael Nyman

His music for the film “The Piano” made him world famous: Michael Nyman is “one of the best known composers in the world” (Die Zeit). Always on the lookout for new challenges, his work not only includes film music – he is, among other things, a conductor, pianist, video artist and writer.
Michael Nyman, one of the most versatile artists of our time, was awarded the SoundTrack_Cologne Special Prize, which was presented by festival director Michael P. Aust.

Extract from the Laudation by Ali N. Askin:

„This year’s winner of Soundtrack Cologne’s honorary award is a composer whom one can describe not only as multitalented and versatile – but also as multi-faceted. [...] A composer-film maker-musician-theorist-bandleader-photographer.”

„The integrity of your work is admirable, regardless of whether you are composing for the concert hall, the opera or the cinema. However well your film music matches the images – it always remains unmistakeable and completely your own.”
