Competition for Young Upcoming Composers and Sound Designers
Create Your Own World of Music and Sounds!
Join the European Talent Competition in the categories film music composition and sound design! Win a one day recording session with the WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne and a 5.1 final mix down for a short film for a DCP at FunDeMental Studios in Frankfurt/Main. Show your skills and create a new sound track / sound design for the short film offered by SoundTrack_Cologne below! Entry deadline for the competition was July 15, 2015. No entry possible anymore.
Active students in the field of sound design/sound and/or composition at an European film and/or music school (without age limit) or creatives in the field of sound design and/or composition/music (maximum age 30) can participate in the competition.
Crowd-puller and program highlight: SoundTrack_Cologne again awards the prize for the best creation of a soundtrack to a chosen short film for young upcoming composers and sound designers in the categories WDR FILMSCORE AWARD and SOUNDDESIGN – the EUROPEAN TALENT COMPETITION. The submitted soundtracks have to present the best possible solution to serve the narration and the imagery of the film. There's one rule:
The use of third party sample libraries is not allowed on this occasion. Record & produce your music, create our own sounds & samples, use everything you've got!
This rule applies to all music and sound entries. For this purpose elements of pop music, jazz, electro can be used just as well as orchestral scores.
Animation film OMA:
This year, the animated film OMA (2014) by Karolien Raeymaekers was selected for the competition. Produced at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium.
Avoiding simplistic emotional cliches that are often found films about death, a powerful visual metaphor is used to show the main character’s fear and confusion over an event that the young protagonist can’t fully understand. Raeymakers directorial and design choices set an emotionally moving pace of the film, alternating between the tranquil beauty of the countryside and the disturbed excitement of the mind.

WDR FILMSCORE AWARD
SoundTrack_Cologne will continue the successful co-operation of the last eleven years with the WDR as part of the EUROPEAN TALENT COMPETITION. The winner of the WDR FILMSCORE AWARD will once again have the opportunity to record his or her own compositions up to a length of 7 min with the WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne – for many young European composers this is the first chance to record a kind of film music business card with a major orchestra. The recorded piece will be presented at SoundTrack_Cologne 13 in 2016. This prize is realized in cooperation with the WDR and the WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne.
EUROPEAN TALENT AWARD SOUNDDESIGN
The prize for the best SOUNDDESIGN is a 5.1 final mix down for a short film for a DCP at FunDeMental Studios, Frankfurt/Main. The short film will then be presented at SoundTrack_Cologne 13 in 2016. This prize is realized in cooperation with FunDeMental Studios in Frankfurt.
Entry deadline for the competition was July 15, 2015. No entry possible anymore.
The twelve finalists will present their work (films, compositions) to the jury and the audience. The prize will be awarded at the official gala on 22nd August 2015.
